Lübeck-Travemünde (dpa / lno) - The budget for 2021 and the establishment of a new communications organization are two of the topics of the Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany, which begins on Thursday.

Because of the corona pandemic, the conference is taking place in the virtual room for the second time.

The synod in November 2020 had already taken place online.

The increased use of virtual space could also be a model for the future, said the Synod's President Ulrike Hillmann on Tuesday.

After all, that would save many synodal long journeys.

But she rejects purely virtual synodal meetings, said Hillmann.

"The synod must always form a piece of community."

The meeting of the 156 church parliamentarians takes place on Thursday and Friday and can be followed in the live stream on the portal of the regional synod.

The focus of the conference is on the budget for 2021. The northern church is facing rough times, said Pastor Andreas Hamann on Tuesday.

The revenue in 2021 is expected to amount to 533 million euros.

Because of the effects of the corona pandemic on the labor market, church tax revenues in 2020 fell by around ten percent compared to the previous year, he said.

"But in the past fat years we have built up reserves that we can and must now fall back on," said Hamann.
