Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - Students in Saarland receive financial support for their semester ticket: In the coming summer semester, the Saarland Ministry of Economics will pay half of the fees for the semester ticket of 124 euros.

The total costs of 1.25 million euros come from the funds to combat the effects of the corona pandemic.

Transport Minister Anke Rehlinger (SPD) is supporting a proposal by the General Student Committee of Saarland University (AStA).

The AStA had pointed out the difficult financial conditions for students during the pandemic.

Typical additional income such as in the catering trade is currently not possible.

"Due to the pandemic, the semester ticket for public transport remained largely unused last year, and we want to make up for that for the coming semester," emphasized Rehlinger.

Around 20,000 students at Saarland universities could benefit from the quick and unbureaucratic help.

The CDU's spokesperson for science policy, Jutta Schmitt-Lang, recently spoke out in favor of reimbursement of the contributions for the winter semester 20/21.
