Hanover (dpa / lni) - In the corona pandemic, homeless people should be allowed to stay protected in hotels - around 118,000 people have joined this demand.

The former Evangelical Bishop Margot Käßmann presented the results of a nationwide online petition to Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) in Hanover on Tuesday.

The pandemic increases the risk for the homeless on the street or in shared accommodation, said Käßmann.

“That is why it is a question of solidarity in our country, I would also say Christian duty and charity, to accommodate people in individual accommodation”.

Opening the hotels also pays off.

The municipalities could pay for the stay of these guests instead of having to pay bridging aid for the closure.

Weil said he saw the seriousness of the subject.

Accommodation in hotels is not a legal problem, the country has created the conditions.

The municipalities are responsible for the accommodation.

He wanted to talk about this proposal at the next meeting with the municipal umbrella organizations.

The petition "Against dying on the street: Open the hotels for the homeless now!"

was launched by 13 street papers.

This also includes «Asphalt» in Hanover, of which Käßmann is involved as co-editor.

"The 22 cold deaths this winter are not yesterday's news for us," said "Asphalt" editor-in-chief Volker Macke.

"They are the result of the pandemic; better accommodation could have prevented some deaths."
