Chemnitz (AP) - Bundesliga basketball team Niners Chemnitz has reacted to the ongoing injury concerns and signed Johnathan Williams on Tuesday.

The US-American signed a contract with the Saxons until the end of the season and will primarily be used in the center position.

Most recently Williams played for the Turkish first division club and Champions League participant Galatasaray Istanbul.

Before that, the 25-year-old made 39 appearances in the NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers and Washington Wizards.

"This is a very important obligation, because our personnel problems in the major positions have been worsening recently," said coach Rodrigo Pastore.

Williams arrived in Chemnitz on Monday and has to undergo the necessary medical examinations and daily tests for the corona virus.

The local health department will decide whether the newcomer can be used in the Niners' away game in Göttingen on Saturday (6 p.m.).

In addition to Filip Stanic, who will be out with a double ligament tear in his ankle joint at least until the end of March, Joe Lawson (Achilles tendon) and Jonas Richter (adductor) have also been affected for several weeks.

"There are still many challenging games ahead of us in the Bundesliga basketball, for which we are now better equipped with John," said Pastore.
