February 23, 2021 The circular of the Ministry of Health has been published which raises the age of those who can receive the AstraZeneca anti-Covid vaccine from 55 to 65 years.

The decision was taken after the opinion of the Commission of the Italian Medicines Agency (Aifa) and, as the circular points out, comes "from new scientific evidence that reports vaccine efficacy estimates higher than those previously reported".

Following the circular 'Update of vaccines available against Sars-CoV-2 / Covid-19 and clarifications on informed consent' - reads - following the opinion of the Technical-Scientific Commission of the Italian Medicines Agency Aifa, and the subsequent clarifications of the Higher Council of Health, therefore indicates "the possibility of using the Covid-19 vaccine 'Vaccine AstraZeneca' in the age group between 18 and 65 years (cohort 1956), with the exception of extremely vulnerable subjects".

"These indications, according to the permanent working group on Sars-CoV-2 - it is explained in the text - are reinforced by new scientific evidence that reports vaccine efficacy estimates higher than those previously reported, and immunogenicity data in older subjects at the age of 55, as well as new international recommendations including the opinion of the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (ed) group ", the World Health Organization.

"Therefore, in relation to category 6 of the document 'Interim Recommendations on the target groups of anti-Sars-CoV-2 / Covid-19 vaccination, update February 8, 2021'", i.e. people aged between 18 and 54 years without conditions that increase clinical risk, the new circular indicates that the AstraZenca vaccine "can be offered up to age 65 (cohort 1956), including those with conditions that may increase the risk of developing severe forms of Covid-19, without that connotation of gravity reported for people defined as extremely vulnerable. This - specifies the ministry - pending the updating of the aforementioned document "
