Erfurt (dpa / th) - In the Thuringian district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen, which is particularly hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic, free, voluntary rapid tests for all residents began on Monday.

Three teams with Red Cross helpers and Bundeswehr soldiers tested a total of 310 people from 4 p.m. in Schmalkalden, Fambach and Steinbach-Hallenberg, as deputy mayor and crisis team leader Susanne Reum announced in the evening.

There was a positive test result.

Reum concluded that the good response showed that many had been waiting for such an offer.

The rapid test offer is currently one of the most promising approaches to reduce the number of new infections in the medium term - even if initially, due to the increasing test intensity, continued high or increasing case numbers are expected.

On Tuesday the three test teams stop in Meiningen and in the municipality of Grabfeld and in Kaltennordheim in the afternoon and early evening.

Residents of neighboring places should also feel addressed by the offers.
