It has become increasingly popular with summit tours - that is, off-piste skiing far from the ski resorts' ski systems.

The summit hikers in the video above met SVT at Snasahögarna, west of Åre, which is one of many popular places for a summit hike.

- Many players in the mountains have noticed a gradual change over several years towards a more extreme off-piste skiing.

On social media, younger skiers are constantly finding new and tougher films to be inspired by, says Per-Olov Wikberg at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Needed more than just avalanche knowledge

Before Christmas, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency conducted a survey with the ski site Freeride.se, aimed at Swedish skiers and snowboarders.

About 1,500 off-piste skiers responded.

The results now mean that the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency wants to draw attention to and prevent other safety aspects than avalanche risk.

- Off-piste skiing is a fantastic experience but requires both preparation and judgment.

We talk a lot about avalanche knowledge, which is fundamental for all off-piste skiing, but we also want to highlight other aspects of risk and safety.

Therefore, we hope that those who plan off-piste during the sports holiday want to ask themselves some important questions before the day and before the ride, says Per-Olov Wikberg at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
