Arnsberg (dpa / lnw) - With a jump into the cold river water, police officers in Arnsberg in the Sauerland may have saved a drunk driver from drowning.

The 35-year-old was supposed to be checked during an operation on Saturday evening in the Neheim district after residents complained about around 60 drivers who raced through the city center with screeching tires and honking loudly.

There was also evidence of a supposed pistol shooter.

When the called officers wanted to check it, he fled by car, the police said on Monday.

After a short drive, the man got out, jumped into the Möhne river and fell.

Officials jumped after and fished the 35-year-old out of the cold water.

An alcohol test showed 1.8 per mille.

A gun was reportedly not found, but a loaded magazine for a blank gun in the man's car.

Arnsberger is being investigated on suspicion of a violation of the weapons law and on account of a drunk driving.

During the entire operation at the motorist meeting, the police also issued 76 dismissals.
