The Planète Bordeaux site, in Beychac-et-Caillau, will be completely redesigned -

Planète Bordeaux

  • Little known, even to Bordeaux residents, Planète Bordeaux is the showcase for Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur appellation wines.

  • Located between Libourne and Bordeaux, it wants to find its place in the shadow of the Cité du Vin.

  • The new concept will take place around a unique cellar, and a course based on personalized workshops.

It is a little-known site, even by Bordelais.

"We have made communication errors in recent years," recognizes Stéphane Gabart, the new president of the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Superior union.

Planète Bordeaux, on the edge of the RN 89 in Beychac-et-Caillau, has nevertheless hosted a cellar and wine tourism space for the general public since 1998, a kind of showcase for this immense appellation.

It brings together white, mellow, clairets, rosés, reds, red superiors and the IGP Fine de Bordeaux, on an area of 50,000 hectares, or half of the Gironde vineyard.

About 4,500 wine growers claim this appellation, for 2.5 million to 3 million hectoliters produced each year.

To relaunch Planète Bordeaux, a new four million euro project was approved by the union's board of directors on December 15.

“Creating visibility on what we are going to offer and do” will be one of the major challenges to be taken up, announces Stéphane Gabart.

The goal would be to go from 10,000 visitors per year to just over 20,000.

Very far, however, from the 450,000 visitors to the Cité du vin ...

"The more supply there is, the more people we will attract"

Inaugurated in 2016, the immense Cité du Vin de Bordeaux came to precipitate the decline of Planète Bordeaux.

Today, the site located halfway between Bordeaux and Libourne, wants to rely on this Cité du vin to relaunch itself.

“It is not the City of Bordeaux wine, but the City of Wine Civilizations, analyzes Stéphane Gabart,“ our interest would therefore be to be complementary.

We want to become a world wine tourism hotspot, in conjunction with the Cité du vin, as well as with the Libourne wine tourism site project, which, we hope, will see the light of day.

There is also a wine city project in Sauternes, we find all of this very good, because the more there is on offer, the more people we will attract.

"

The Planète Bordeaux project will be spread over three years for an opening in early 2024, even if the site will not close its doors during the works.

The first axis will focus on the cellar of the 1,001 châteaux, already in existence but which will be enhanced.

“We think this is a richness, because we are the only appellation which has such a great diversity of terroir wines with more than 800 references coming only from Bordeaux.

"

Getting out of the crisis game

Around the cellar, several themes will be deployed linked to taste, flavors and scents.

“We want something very human, around the experience, that the route can be done according to the aromatic and taste profile of the visitor”.

There will thus be tasting association workshops, food and wine pairing, a shop for short circuits and local produce, and a catering section.

“Finally, we are planning a large multisensory space with several dimensions on our landscapes and our professions.

"

Many tourists visiting the Cité du vin also stop in Saint-Emilion.

Stéphane Gabart notes that Planète Bordeaux has the chance to be halfway between the two.

He finally wants to believe that his project can emerge as a winner from the health crisis.

“We are talking more and more about short circuits, activities on a human scale, we have the impression that a part of the population is moving away from pharaonic projects, we can get out of the game from this new trend.
