Halle (dpa / sa) - The corona pandemic is becoming an existential risk from the point of view of Saxony-Anhalt's hospitals.

The Saxony-Anhalt Hospital Society announced on Monday that the financial rescue package had large gaps.

A recent survey shows that all clinics have significant economic problems.

Around 50 percent of the 46 hospitals took part in the survey that it could be rated as representative.

In January alone there was an income deficit of almost 55 million euros, it said.

In the inpatient area, the loss of revenue compared to the same month last year averaged 26 percent.

In addition, there is a minus of 3.4 million euros in outpatient services and optional services.

For the full year 2021, the hospitals in the country expect a decrease in occupancy of 18 percent compared to 2019.

"The result shows that urgent repairs to the rescue umbrella are necessary, since both the hospitals that have received compensation payments and the other hospitals cannot compensate for significant deficits," explained the managing director of the Sachsen-Anhalt Hospital Association.

The federal government's current rescue package does not offer any protection against pandemic-related revenue losses for 2021.

In addition to liquidity support, the clinics needed an annual adjustment for 2021, as they did in 2020.

Due to the corona pandemic, plannable treatments and interventions had to be postponed, it said.

Fewer patients were admitted, and staff were also absent due to the corona.

In the long term, regular operations cannot be run in any of the hospitals.
