France: confinement of the Alpes-Maritimes coast for the next two weekends

Containment will be established for the next two weekends in the Alpes-Maritimes (south-east) in order to fight against the spread of the coronavirus.
This is what the prefect of the department announced on Monday, February 22.

One hour outings will be authorized within a radius of 5 kilometers from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday 6 a.m., in an area extending from Théoule-sur-Mer to Menton, the most populated urban areas.
For 15 days from Tuesday, shops over 5,000m2, except pharmacies and food shops, will also be closed in the department.
Border controls will be stepped up, especially at airports.
The vaccination campaign will be accelerated and new rules will apply to businesses.
In Nice, a critical situation
It is in Nice, on the French Riviera, that the situation seems to be the most critical.
The city is the most affected in France.
The incidence rate exceeds 700 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, more than three times the national average.
Across the Alpes-Maritimes department, the incidence is also very high: 570 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Hospitals are under pressure, close to saturation, the tension in the intensive care units has never been greater since the start of the pandemic.
The situation in the Alpes-Maritimes began to deteriorate at the end of December, the curve has continued to rise since.
Is a relaxation of barrier gestures involved?
Is it due to the so-called British variant, a priori more contagious, which seems to have spread, in Nice in particular?
Even if they have been reduced and tests are imposed, did travel to Monaco and Italy play a role?
The reasons for this acceleration of the epidemic are not clear, but the challenge now is to curb the dynamics of the epidemic in the region, therefore via territorial measures.
