Cologne (dpa) - A 53-year-old man from Cologne is said to have sexually abused children and is therefore in custody.

The police in Cologne announced on Monday that the police became aware of the case through investigations in the Bergisch Gladbach child abuse complex.

The starting point was therefore that the 53-year-old is said to have caused children on social media platforms to take child pornographic photos and videos for money and send them to him by providing false information about himself.

The man's apartment had been searched last week.

When evaluating the data of the confessing man, the investigators also found files that indicated active sexual abuse.

"A short time later, investigators identified an eleven-year-old girl in the Cologne area and a 13-year-old boy from Bavaria," said the police.

The children had confirmed the allegations and provided extensive information.

The district court in Cologne issued an arrest warrant last Thursday.

The police said that 16 months after the establishment of the Special Structural Organization (BAO) "Mountain", the investigation was directed for the first time against a suspect who had made contact with strange children via social media platforms.

The BAO has been investigating since October 2019. In the house of a man from Bergisch Gladbach near Cologne, huge amounts of child pornographic data were found.

Through him, the investigators came across hundreds of other suspects.
