Munich (dpa / lby) - The Catholic Church wants to remember the victims of the corona pandemic with church services.

The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising as well as the dioceses of Würzburg, Passau and Eichstätt are participating in the Europe-wide initiative next Saturday.

The memory of the dead is a "mandate to us as a church and for society as a whole," emphasized Cardinal Reinhard Marx on Monday according to a statement.

For many it was a "particularly painful experience" that relatives died lonely and funerals could only take place on a small scale.

The memorial services are an initiative of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE).

In each member state, church services for the dead of the pandemic are held on a certain day during Lent, in Germany on February 27.
