Merrick Garland, American judge recently appointed Minister of Justice by Joe Biden, has pledged to prosecute supporters of Donald Trump who attacked the Capitol on January 6.
He also pledged to guarantee the “independence” of his ministry.
"I will lead the legal proceedings against white supremacists and other people who stormed the Capitol on January 6," assured Merrick Garland in a speech to American senators.
At least 230 people have already been indicted for their involvement in the deadly attack on Congress.
Investigations target hundreds of other individuals.
Fight against judicial inequalities
The 68-year-old judge also pledged to "protect the independence" of the Justice Department from "partisan influences".
A moderate progressive, the magistrate insisted on the importance of fighting against the legal inequalities suffered by people from ethnic minorities in the United States.
President of the Washington Court of Appeal, Merrick Garland was chosen by Barack Obama five years ago to enter the Supreme Court but Republican senators had blocked his nomination.
After his two-day grand oral on Monday and Tuesday, elected officials will vote on his confirmation at the head of the Ministry of Justice.
