The security situation in Tripoli calmed down today, Monday, after the attempt to assassinate the Minister of Interior, Fathi Bashagha, on the highway west of the capital, Tripoli, after the parties agreed to appeal to the authority of law to conduct a transparent investigation, and a vehicle carrying 3 armed men intercepted the convoy of Minister Bashagha on his way to his residence in the area Janzour (west of Tripoli), returning from a meeting with Mustafa Sanallah, head of the National Oil Corporation.

And the Libyan Ministry of Interior announced in a statement that the minister's convoy came under fire from automatic weapons from an armored vehicle, as the security team accompanying Bashagha responded to the militants.

The gunmen's car bears the logo of the newly created "stability support" agency from the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord, which includes armed groups opposed to Minister Bashagha.

An armed group belonging to the city of Zawia stormed the Martyrs Square (in central Tripoli) and attacked the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior in the capital, in response to the killing of one of its members in an incident that intercepted the convoy of the Minister of Interior.

The coroner's report showed that one of the gunmen, called Radwan Al-Hanqari, was killed as a result of fractures in the chest cage, and the body was free of any bullets.

This incident increases tension between Bashagha and armed groups in the city of Zawiya, months after the Ministry of Interior arrested one of the heads of smuggling in Libya, Abdul Rahman Milad, "known as Bija," and he belongs to the city of Zawiya (west of Tripoli).

For its part, the American and French embassies and the Qatari Foreign Ministry condemned the assassination attempt, and called for a speedy investigation to punish those involved. The US ambassador said that "the internal focus of the Government of National Accord on ending the influence of the militias enjoys our full support."

Calm down

A senior security source at the Ministry of the Interior said that a meeting was held in Tripoli between the leaders of the "Volcano of Anger" operation to calm the tense situation against the backdrop of the assassination attempt on Bashagha.

The source added to Al-Jazeera Net that the leaders present at the meeting agreed to form an impartial committee to investigate the case after everyone agreed to abide by the results of the investigations, and that the Attorney General's office received the case file, and listened to the testimony of the guards accompanying the Minister of Interior and the two gunmen injured during the incident.

In his statements to Al-Jazeera Net, the source excludes the impact of the assassination attempt on Bashagha on the security scene in western Libya, indicating that the Ministry of Interior is carrying out its tasks assigned to it in protecting the country.

Armed groups revolt

Member of the Supreme Council of State, Ahmed Naqi, affirms that the proliferation of weapons is in the hands of armed groups that are outside the circle of law.

It is the result of the armed groups' rebellion against any official entity in the state and their lack of respect, and an attempt to intimidate them to confuse the political scene.

"I do not think that the new executive authority is capable of containing the incident, rather, its role will be limited to mediating between the parties and finding solutions to the intervention of the sheikhs of the reconciliation without having a real effect for the state to lose its power," Naqi told Al-Jazeera Net.

He considers that social fissures exist everywhere between the parties as a result of wars and struggles for power and foreign interventions that will end in the event of the unification of security and military institutions.

Contingent alliances

In turn, political analyst Abdullah al-Kabir believes that the incident will increase tension between the Minister of Interior and armed groups in the cities of Tripoli and Al-Zawiya by consecrating the emergency alliances between them.

"Of course, if hostility develops, an armed clash will follow, with catastrophic consequences. Therefore, some seek to avoid a clash because everyone realizes that no one wants to give a golden opportunity to other parties planning to return to Tripoli and repeat the attempt to control the capital."

Al-Kabeer indicates to Al-Jazeera Net that everyone has accepted a legal, transparent and impartial investigation into the incident to defuse the possible confrontation, and believes that the new executive authority's call for calm is a successful step by declaring its clear position that is not biased towards any party.

He explains that the American ambassador's quick response to the incident confirms the strong relationship between the Minister of the Interior and the US administration, which confuses the calculations of the new prime minister if he plans to grant the interior to a region other than Tripoli.
