Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency issued a joint statement that the two sides reached a provisional technical agreement

According to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency on the evening of February 21, local time, IAEA Director General Grossi ended his visit to Iran.

Subsequently, Grossi said that it is regrettable that Iran will suspend the voluntary implementation of the additional protocol, but the number of inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency against Iran will not be reduced.

After intense negotiations with Iran, very positive results have been achieved. At present, the two sides have reached the following consensus.

Iran will stop voluntarily implementing the additional protocol, but the two sides have reached a temporary special agreement so that the International Atomic Energy Agency can continue to monitor and verify Iran’s nuclear activities.

The agreement lasts for three months and will facilitate political negotiations (of all parties).

Grossi said that the International Atomic Energy Agency's schedule of activities will be changed, accessibility will be reduced, but the level of inspection and supervision will remain at the required level, the number of inspectors will not decrease, and surprise inspections are still possible.

In addition, the official website of the International Atomic Energy Agency also released a joint statement between the two parties, which emphasized that it will continue to strengthen cooperation and mutual trust and will continue to implement the spirit of the joint statement on August 26, 2020.

The Iranian Atomic Energy Organization has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency that Iran will implement the "Anti-Sanctions Strategy Law" passed by the parliament and suspend voluntary implementation of the additional protocol of the "Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty" on February 23.

In view of the foregoing, in order for the International Atomic Energy Agency to continue its supervision and inspection work in Iran, the two parties agree to:

  1. As in the past, Iran will accept the supervision and inspection work of the International Atomic Energy Agency within the framework of the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement without limitation.

  2. The two parties have reached a temporary technical agreement, which will maintain the necessary supervision and verification work of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Iran for a period of up to 3 months.

  3. The temporary technical agreement will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it achieves its purpose.
