Mainz (dpa / lrs) - After months of closure, the primary schools in Rhineland-Palatinate are reopening today for teaching in the classroom.

Most of the 148,000 children in primary school then begin to switch between learning at school and distance learning at home.

For this, the classes are divided.

Where the premises leave a lot of space and allow a minimum distance of 1.50 meters, all children in the first four grades can go back to school.

Education Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) said in advance that the children benefit from every day at school.

"Studies show that many children and young people suffer from school closings, which is why we have to give them - and also their parents - a perspective, a perspective on learning in presence, on more togetherness."

In the districts of Germersheim and Cochem-Zell, compulsory attendance was lifted at the start of alternate classes.

Because of the increased incidence of corona, parents can decide whether to send their children to school.

The established hygiene rules apply at the school.

Hubig called "distance, mask requirement, fixed study groups, a ventilation concept and the other hygiene rules".

Mouth and nose protection should also be worn in class;

Teachers should put on masks with a higher standard of protection.

These masks are recommended for students in the first four grades, but everyday masks are also permitted.

Obligation to attend schools was lifted on December 16 due to the sharp rise in the number of corona infections.

On January 4th, all schools in Rhineland-Palatinate started distance learning.

Actually, the start of alternating classes at the primary schools was planned for February 1, but was then stopped at short notice in view of the newly emerging infections with mutated coronaviruses.
