Melbourne (AP) - Novak Djokovic is aiming for his ninth Melbourne title and a total of 18th Grand Slam triumph in the final of the Australian Open.

In the final on Sunday (9.30 a.m. / Eurosport), the Serbian world number one will face the Russian challenger Daniil Medvedev.

A look at the tennis duel:

DIRECT COMPARISON: The two have played against each other seven times, Djokovic has won four times and thus once more.

The Russian won the last meeting at the ATP Finals in London at the end of last season in two sets.

The only Grand Slam duel to date was decided by Djokovic at the Australian Open 2019 in four sets.

COURSE OF THE TOURNAMENT: Defending champion Djokovic did not seem inviolable in the meantime and had to fight with an abdominal muscle injury.

In the quarter-finals against Alexander Zverev from Hamburg, he played strong in the decisive moments and had no problems in the semifinals against Russian qualifier Aslan Karazew.

Medvedev marched confidently through the tournament - except in the third round against Filip Krajinovic, he did not give a set.

Against Djokovic's compatriot, he surprisingly needed five sets.

WORLD RANKING: It has been clear since the quarter-finals of the Spanish world number two Rafael Nadal that Djokovic will remain number one beyond March 8th.

With this, the 33-year-old will replace the previous record holder Roger Federer from Switzerland with 311 weeks at the top.

Medvedev will move up to at least third place and can even finish second with a win.

RECORDS AND STATISTICS: The record champion of the Australian Open is the eight-time title holder Djokovic anyway.

His ninth final in Melbourne should end with the ninth title.

The Serbian top star (17 Grand Slam titles) wants to get closer to Federer and Nadal (20 each).

Medvedev is contesting his second Grand Slam final, he has not yet won a title in this category.

However, the 25-year-old has impressive series: he has won 20 matches in a row and his last 12 games against top ten players.
