Iran announced that it had held "fruitful" discussions yesterday with the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, who is visiting it two days before the start of the implementation of a law that reduces the work of international inspectors if the US sanctions are not lifted.

The Iranian move, which is scheduled to take effect tomorrow, will be the latest in a series of measures that Tehran has taken, starting in 2019, to backtrack on many of its obligations under the agreement on its nuclear program, after Washington withdrew from it in 2018.

The day after his arrival in Tehran, Rafael Grossi met yesterday with the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, followed by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Tehran’s ambassador to the Vienna-based agency, Kazem Gharibabadi, said: “Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency have conducted fruitful discussions based on mutual respect, and their results will be published,” on Twitter, after attending the Salehi-Grossi meeting.

He did not mention additional details, noting that Grossi will hold a press conference upon his return to Vienna.

Iran has previously confirmed that implementing the Shura Council’s decision will not lead to a complete suspension or expulsion of the inspectors’s work, a position that Zarif reaffirmed yesterday, warning at the same time that Tehran will continue to reduce its obligations unless the other parties return to their obligations, especially the lifting of sanctions.

In an interview with the Iranian English-language Press TV, he said that Tehran would inform Grossi “about respecting the rules and laws of our country that mean implementing the parliament’s decision.”

At the same time, not reaching a dead end in order to be able to implement commitments to show that Iran's nuclear program remains peaceful. ”
