A 38-year-old Sudanese in police custody for the fatal assault on Friday of an official at a Pau refugee center, will be referred on Sunday for an indictment for murder and incarceration, announced on Saturday. Pau prosecutor's office, which confirmed the absence of "any terrorist intention".

The man's custody was extended this Saturday morning at the end of the first twenty-four hours, Pau prosecutor Cécile Gensac also said at a press conference.

The attacker was "neither reported nor recorded in the context of violent radicalization, and the elements collected make it possible to rule out any terrorist intention," said Cécile Gensac, confirming first information Friday from a police source.

The Sudanese, in France since 2015, but who no longer benefited since November 2020 from a residence permit following convictions, admitted the facts and explained to the investigators that he "harbored reproaches" with regard to the structure host of Pau, added the prosecutor.

He considered "that his situation was not properly treated".

13 stab wounds

He had come to "obtain from the structure and therefore from the victim a document (...) in order to allow him to stay on the national territory" and avoid returning to Sudan, according to Cécile Gensac.

He had already come "three times in the current week" to the center, where he had been taken care of in the past.

Friday, around 10:30 am, he came to the reception center for asylum seekers Isard-COS in Pau.

There, he is suspected of having carried several stab wounds - 13 wounds were identified - to a department head of the center, before being overpowered by employees, then arrested without opposing resistance.

The 46-year-old victim, a father of two, an experienced social worker who had been head of the structure's "asylum" pole for six years, died of his injuries about an hour after the beatings, said the prosecutor.
