Unlike the World Heritage List, which lists unique cultural and natural environments, such as the pyramids of Egypt, the cultural heritage list is about the living cultural heritage such as customs, crafts, oral tradition - or dishes.

The baguette is already protected in France under the 1993 law.

But the bakers in the country want to go one step further and think that global protection is needed, not only to protect the name but also the recipe.

To meet the criteria, a baguette may contain only four ingredients: wheat flour, water, yeast and salt.

It must not be frozen or contain added preservatives.

- The traditional baguette, made from quality ingredients, risks eventually disappearing, says Dominique Anract, chairman of the country's bakers' association.

However, it may take some time before the baguette ends up on the list.

Only after an application has been approved and considered by a council of representatives from 200 countries can a cultural heritage be added to UNESCO's lists of intangible cultural heritage.
