Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Many are happy about the sun these days, but for the moor frogs the warming rays are currently a great danger.

"They are the first to venture out of their winter quarters and are in danger of death from road traffic," said Rainhard Baier from the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Union.

The conservationists take care of amphibians and reptiles on a voluntary basis.

Since the ground was still deeply frozen, the catching vessels could not be brought into the ground, said Baier.

This is where the moor frogs are collected to prevent them from being run over should they cross the road.

They are looking for spawning waters and mating partners.

«So far we cannot help the animals on their way.

The ground has to thaw first, »said Baier.

The death of many of the protected animals in traffic is predictable.

When the toad fences and vessels are in the ground, the moor frogs and other amphibians will fall in.

Helpers can then safely carry them over dangerous traffic routes and then release them again.

Other frogs as well as toads, newts and toads are slowly awakening from hibernation.

"In the coming weeks, the mating process will pick up speed significantly," said Sascha Schleich, spokesman for the Nabu Federal Committee of Field Herpetology and Ichthyofaunistics, which is committed to protecting fish, amphibians and reptiles.

The Naturschutzbund appealed to drivers not to drive more than 30 kilometers per hour on amphibious trails.

That could save the lives of many animals.
