Berlin (dpa) - According to the Biontech founder Ugur Sahin, the manufacturers Biontech and Pfizer offered their vaccine to all industrialized countries in the summer of 2020 at a price between 30 and 15 euros.

The price model was calculated in July for all industrialized countries with correspondingly large order quantities, Sahin told the "Bild" (Saturday).

“On July 22nd, we signed the USA contract based on the new parameters, from which the $ 19.50 was evident.

All industrialized countries then received this price model. "

In the fall, the EU Commission initially secured 300 million doses of the vaccine from the Mainz-based manufacturer Biontech and the US company Pfizer in a framework agreement.

The price remained under lock and key.

The mRNA vaccines developed by Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna using a novel process are significantly more expensive than conventional products, such as the vaccine from Astrazeneca.

According to Sahin, it was unclear what the conditions for the production of the vaccine would look like by the summer.

"In 2019 and 2020, we initially only produced small doses ourselves for our clinical studies," he told the "image".

The cost of the first 2,000 cans was 1.5 million euros.

«There was no infrastructure for mass production.

At the time, we simply did not know how exactly production could be scaled, what exactly the studies with regard to the mRNA dosage would reveal and how the production processes and costs would be exactly. "

In the summer, the US company Pfizer was able to work out the pricing model within three weeks.
