Hamburg (dpa / lno) - After Berlin, VW is now also launching the WeShare car sharing service in Hamburg.

From February 25th, 400 fully electric vehicles of the ID.3 model will initially be available, and from April up to 800. WeShare is the first fully electric car sharing provider in the Hanseatic city, said the Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition, Anjes Tjarks (Greens), on Friday.

"This means that the drive turnaround is continuing with force for car sharing too."

WeShare's business area initially covers around 100 square kilometers.

It extends from Osdorf in the west to Billstedt in the east and from Fuhlsbüttel in the north to the Elbe in the south.

Because of the corona pandemic, the start in Hamburg had been postponed by a year, according to the car company.

"We are pleased that Volkswagen's electric car sharing is now making traffic in Hamburg more flexible, cleaner and quieter," said Ralf Brandstätter, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Passenger Cars. "At least that is the contribution we have made."

According to VW, the Hamburg WeShare vehicles have a battery range of up to 425 kilometers.

In order to be able to charge the vehicles, there are partnerships with the Volkswagen subsidiary Moia and the Schwarz Group (Lidl, Kaufland).

The WeShare offer has been available in Berlin since summer 2019. There, more than 100,000 registered customers can currently access 1,500 e-Golfs and ID.3s, reported WeShare boss Philipp Reth.

By the end of the year, the company is targeting 150,000 users in the capital and 50,000 in Hamburg.
