The Hamburg police's bicycle squadrons had their sights set on red light and turning violations by cyclists and motorists on Thursday morning.

As the police announced on Friday, a total of 78 violations were punished between 8 a.m. and 12 noon during controls in St. Georg around the Berliner Tor.

In almost half of the cases, cyclists disregarded a red traffic light (33), in only one case this was the case with a car driver.

However, in 24 cases, cars were illegally parked on sidewalks or bike paths.

While the officers had to intervene in two cases with drivers because they made mistakes when turning, they caught eight ghost cyclists who were on the wrong side of the bike path.

Significantly more motorists (6) than cyclists (1) were caught while driving with a cell phone on the ear.

In addition, a driver violated the lateral clearance to be observed, the police discovered a vehicle that had been parked without authorization and wrote a deficiency report.

According to the police, disregarding the red light of traffic lights by cyclists and motorists is one of the main causes of accidents in road traffic.

In addition, careless turns to the right repeatedly lead to serious accidents.

In order to further sensitize road users to these risks and to punish violations consistently, the police have announced further priority missions and large-scale controls.
