Erfurt (dpa / th) - The Thuringian State Hunting Association has spoken out against plans by the state government to shorten the closed season when hunting roe deer.

According to a draft ordinance by the Ministry of Forestry, roe deer hunting in Thuringia should start on March 31 of each year.

So far, deer can only be hunted in Thuringia from the beginning of May.

The draft contradicts all wild-biological sensible stipulations on hunting and closed seasons, criticized the State Hunting Association in a message on Friday.

“Roe deer need early spring to build up their energy reserves again, the bucks still push their horns, the fetus grows with the doe.

During this time, when the roe deer are very active and look for food, especially in the open areas, increased unrest leads to retreat into the forest areas and to more browsing ”, says the message.

The Ministry of Forestry promises to reduce the damage caused by browsing damage in the forest by hunting roebucks and deer in the past.

"The extensive reforestation and forest conversion requirements are being called into question by roe deer browsing in many places," said Forest Minister Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff most recently.

Countering this with a temporary reduction in the closed season has already proven helpful last year, according to the forestry authorities.

The State Hunting Association also fears that earlier hunting of roe deer could also have a negative impact on other wild animals in the affected areas, which also have to replenish the energy reserves they used up in winter.

In order to permanently reduce the roe deer population, more female animals would have to be shot in the autumn months.

The opposition parties from the CDU and AfD had already spoken out against extending the hunting season for roe deer.
