Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - For the DFB Cup quarter finalist Rot-Weiss Essen, the mandatory break in the Regionalliga West has been extended by another week.

The football game against SV Lippstadt scheduled for Saturday was canceled by the West German Football Association (WDFV) on Thursday evening as a result of a suspected corona case among the opponent.

For Essen, who last competed in the league on January 23 (2-0 against Bonn), this is the third game cancellation in a row.

The traditional club ranks second in the west season behind front runner Borussia Dortmund II, whose match on Saturday at Bonner SC was also canceled due to weather conditions.

In February the Essen games against Borussia Dortmund II and at RW Ahlen could not take place because of unplayable places.

At the end of January, RWE was regularly out of play in the league, but was able to contest and win the cup round of 16 against Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen (2-1) on February 2.

“The cancellation of the third game in a row is a shame, but it cannot be changed.

The health of everyone involved comes first, ”said RWE Sports Director Jörn Nowak.

In the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup, Essen awaits second division Holstein Kiel on March 3 (6:30 p.m.), while the regional league game at Fortuna Düsseldorf II is scheduled for February 26 (7:00 p.m.).
