Bad Honnef (dpa) - The German wood industry increased its sales by 0.8 percent to around 36.5 billion euros last year.

While furniture manufacturers sold less than in 2019, business was extremely good for companies that benefited from the stable order situation.

With prefabricated houses, windows, doors, stairs and other wooden construction elements, the companies generated sales of around 6.8 billion euros, 10.2 percent more than in 2019, as reported by the Main Association of the German Timber Industry.

The sawmills reported an increase in sales of 6.0 percent to 5.1 billion euros.

The furniture industry, the largest segment of the wood industry with a turnover of 17.2 billion euros, had to give way.

According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, their sales fell by 3.7 percent to 17.2 billion euros.

The wood industry also includes manufacturers of musical instruments.

In 2020, their turnover fell by 7.0 percent to 336 million euros due to a sharp drop in exports.
