Erfurt / Halle (Saale) (dpa / th) - In Thuringia, the number of temporary workers in the Corona year 2020 has further decreased significantly.

In June of last year, 25,123 temporary workers were employed in the Free State of social security or were marginally employed, as the regional directorate for Saxony-Anhalt-Thuringia of the Federal Employment Agency in Halle reported on Thursday.

In June 2019 there were still 30 097.

That corresponds to a decrease of almost 17 percent.

"The temporary work has been losing importance in Thuringia for about three years," said the managing director of the regional directorate, Markus Behrens.

Among other things, this has economic reasons, but stricter regulations in the industry also play a role.

The corona crisis accelerated and intensified this downward trend, especially in the first half of 2020 through border closings and the interruption of supply chains.

That led to the layoff of temporary workers.

The demand for temporary workers had also decreased significantly during the pandemic.

The temporary employment agencies reported 13,802 new jobs to the employment agencies in Thuringia last year, 3429 or 20 percent less than in 2019. Behrens expects demand to stabilize somewhat again, especially in the post-crisis period, when order peaks in certain industries are to be expected.

According to the information, around three percent of employees in Thuringia are temporary workers.

35 percent of the temporary workers worked in transport and logistics professions, 15 percent in professions in the metal industry and almost 12 percent in mechanical and vehicle engineering professions.

Statistically speaking, temporary workers also earned less than the average.
