Halle (dpa / sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, the number of temporary workers has continued to fall.

The Corona crisis has accelerated and strengthened this trend in recent years, announced the Regional Directorate Saxony-Anhalt-Thuringia of the Federal Employment Agency on Thursday in Halle.

According to the information, around 17,800 temporary workers were employed in Saxony-Anhalt in June 2020, either subject to social insurance or marginally.

That was around 4000 or 18 percent less than in the same month last year.

In June 2019 there were still around 21,800 temporary workers.

For comparison: between June 2018 and June 2019, their number had decreased by 10 percent.

Temporary work has been losing importance in Saxony-Anhalt for about three years, explained Markus Behrens, managing director of the regional directorate.

The reason given was, among other things, that the industry had reacted very sensitively to the economic downturn in recent years, especially in the manufacturing sector.

In the first half of 2020 in particular, the corona crisis acted like a catalyst on the decline in temporary work.

In the first lockdown, border closings and interruptions in supply chains also affected many companies in the manufacturing and logistics sectors, which employ many temporary workers, Behrens said.

Temporary work is considered an indicator of the economy.

When the economy weakens, companies rely less on contract workers than in times of economic boom.

This can also be seen in the unemployment statistics.

According to the information, more temporary workers lost their jobs in both April and May 2020 than in the previous year.

During the first lockdown in Saxony-Anhalt in April 2020, around 1,000 temporary workers who were subject to social security contributions were unemployed, 193 more than in the same month last year (plus 23.9 percent).

984 temporary workers were laid off in May 2020, 203 more than in May 2019 (plus 26 percent).
