Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia's animal welfare officer Gerlinde von Dehn has warned against buying a dog rashly in Corona times.

On Thursday she presented a catalog with tips and basic rules in Düsseldorf.

First of all, crucial questions need to be clarified: Is there enough time for the animal - "and that for the entire life of the dog"?

Are space and costs secured?

Which dog suits me and where do I buy it?

According to the Association for German Dogs and animal welfare organizations, the demand for dogs in the past year was already above average, reported von Dehn.

"Please take your time and contribute by buying dogs responsibly to show the red card for tortured animals," she warned.

A number of rules should be observed: Before deciding on a particular breed of dog, a veterinarian or canine expert should be consulted.

Never buy dogs from illegal rearing "out of the trunk", only from reputable breeders.

"Do not buy a particularly doll-like dog," asked von Dehn.

«These could be signs of an" unnatural "breed."

So cute looking bulging eyes would be caused by a severely deformed skull.

A small snub nose can mean that the dog does not get enough air and can only sleep with its head up.

"The agony of choice must not become the choice of agony," warned the animal rights activist.
