Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher has emphasized that the further infection process in the corona pandemic is also decisive for the opening of daycare centers.

The SPD politician said in an interview with the "Hamburger Abendblatt" (Wednesday) whether the daycare centers could open in the March vacation.

"But here, too, the following applies: the further infection process is decisive."

The social welfare authorities announced last week that they hope to be able to take the first steps towards regular daycare operations as early as the beginning of March.

Before opening, however, the infection process and possible effects of the virus mutants on children must be precisely assessed.

The daycare centers are currently in so-called extended emergency operation due to the corona pandemic, but around a third of the children are still cared for there.

The schools can only be expected to relax after the two-week vacation.

Tschentscher had refused to open the schools for a few days before the early start of the holidays in the city.

"We in Hamburg leave the regulations as they are until the spring break, because firstly we do not currently have a sufficiently low infection rate and secondly, already from March 1, vacation", Tschentscher also told the newspaper.

"Therefore, for practical reasons, it does not make sense to convert school operations beforehand."
