Earlier this week, the ruling military junta claimed that the demonstrations would end soon.

But on Wednesday, thousands of residents took to the streets of Myanmar's largest city, Yangon.

Lawyer Kyi Pyar, who previously worked under imprisoned leader Aung San Suu Kyi, said the military statement provoked residents to show even more dissatisfaction.

- This upset the people, she told AP, and continued:

- We are not weak, we will never give up the fight against the military regime.

So now we're back on the streets again.

Blocked roads

In Yangon, protesters have blocked roads with various vehicles.

Thousands gathered at the centrally located Sule Pagoda where Suu Kyi's party colleague Sithu Maung gave a speech, Al Jazeera reports.

"We love democracy and hate the junta," he told the crowd.

- We must be the last generation to experience a coup.

Demonstrations in several cities

The protests are not just in Yangon.

In the country's capital Naypyitaw, protesters have also tried to block roads.

One of them jokingly told the AP that his car broke down in the middle of a street "because of the suffering that the people are going through right now".

There are also reports of demonstrations in the second largest city of Mandalay.

Suu Kyi was arrested on February 1.

She has been prosecuted for violating the law on natural disasters, as well as for violating the country's export and import laws.

Her case will be heard in court on March 1.
