North Korea Kim Jong-un's wife reappears after nine months missing
The North Korean media published images of the first lady,
Ri Sol-ju, on
Wednesday
after more than a year without being seen in any public act.
The
Rodong Sinmun
newspaper
published on Wednesday photos of the leader Kim Jong-un and his wife at the Mansudae Theater of the Arts, in the North Korean capital.
The two attended a function on Tuesday to mark the birth anniversary of
Kim Jong-il, the
former North Korean leader who died in 2011 and the father of Kim Jong-un.
The last time Ri appeared in the North Korean media was in January last year, when she and her husband attended
a New Year's concert
at Pyongyang's Samjiyon Theater.
Ri's absence in the past year contrasts with his repeated public appearances in 2019, when he accompanied Kim on a visit to a baleario or when he posed with the leader in equestrian photos on the slopes of Mount Paektu.
Her failure to appear in North Korean propaganda for so long has sparked
various speculations,
including the possibility of a pregnancy.
It is not the first time that Ri has been absent from public events for several months and it is believed that on those occasions when she disappeared from the public eye, they could
coincide with her previous pregnancies.
It is also believed that his absence may respond to the fact that the first lady
would be avoiding public spaces during the pandemic
to avoid infecting her children, a theory that members of the South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) have supported.
On the other hand, images from Tuesday's concert show that all attendees, including Ri and Kim Jong-un, are
not wearing masks.
The hermetic Asian country continues to assure the World Health Organization (WHO) that
it has not yet registered a single contagion of covid-19.
However, and despite the fact that North Korea closed its borders in January 2020, the total absence of infections is a statement that
many experts doubt,
taking into account the porosity of the North Korean border with China.
