Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - In the vaccination centers in Saxony-Anhalt, only a small part of the corona vaccination doses supplied by the manufacturer Astrazeneca have so far been used.

According to the state government, only 3738 doses of the British-Swedish manufacturer had been injected by Tuesday, although the country had already delivered 17,850 doses to the vaccination centers.

The vaccination centers retain the required second dose for each first vaccination.

Even then, 8,925 people could theoretically have been vaccinated with Astrazeneca.

The Ministry of Health does not know the reason for the slow use, the distribution of the vaccinations is organized in the districts by the vaccination centers.

So far, however, they have mainly focused on those over 80 years of age and they have not yet been vaccinated with the Astrazeneca vaccine in Germany.

Astrazeneca would therefore come first and foremost "for nurses and medical staff who are named in group one," said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health.

In Saxony-Anhalt there is no option to choose which substance you want to be vaccinated with.

In Germany, the vaccination commission recommended the vaccine from the British-Swedish company only for people under 65 years of age, because according to the information provided, there was no evidence of its effectiveness in older people.

While the means from Moderna and Biontech have an effectiveness of 94 and 95 percent, according to a new study, Astrazeneca has up to 82 percent after the second vaccination.

The virologist Christian Drosten had said with regard to Astrazeneca: "The vaccines that we have are extremely good compared to what one could expect."
