Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Another case of avian influenza has been found at a commercial animal keeper in Prignitz.

The H5N8 pathogen (bird flu / avian influenza) could be detected, the consumer protection ministry announced on Wednesday evening.

A total of 12,000 turkeys were killed and disposed of harmlessly by order of the veterinary office.

It was the fifth case of the disease in a poultry herd within a few weeks in the country, it said.

The ministry appealed to poultry farmers to strictly adhere to all safety measures.

The stable obligation that has been in force in the risk areas since December 13, 2020 must be strictly observed.

The national reference laboratory Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut confirmed according to the information that the new case was the avian influenza virus of the subtype H5N8.

According to the information, a restricted area with a radius of at least three kilometers and an observation area with a radius of at least ten kilometers have been set up around the company.

The avian influenza pathogen H5N8 was detected at the end of December 2020 in a small holding in the Spree-Neisse district, at the end of January 2021 in a commercial turkey population in Prignitz and in early February in two herds in the Uckermark.

In addition, the virus was detected in several wild birds in Brandenburg in autumn and winter.

Avian influenza, also known colloquially as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease for poultry and other birds.

According to the Ministry, it can quickly reach epidemic proportions in poultry flocks.
