Berlin (dpa) - The number of visitors to German cinemas has plummeted in the pandemic.

Around 38.1 million tickets were sold last year - around 80.5 million fewer than a year earlier.

This corresponds to a decrease of around 68 percent, as can be seen from figures from the Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA) in Berlin.

"The fact that 2020 would be dramatic for the cinemas was already announced at the first corona lockdown in mid-March," says the analysis available to the German press agency.

The cinemas were already closed for several weeks in spring 2020, due to the distance rules, only significantly fewer visitors were allowed into the cinema halls in summer and autumn.

Since November, movie theaters and other facilities nationwide have been closed again in order to slow down the spread of the corona virus.

Last year, the cinemas made correspondingly less sales.

According to the survey, they took in around 318 million euros - around 69 percent less than in 2019. At that time, the cinemas had turned over more than a billion euros.

Thanks to blockbusters, the number of visitors increased again.

This time too, large productions should have come to the screen.

Because of the pandemic, for example, the start of the new "James Bond" film was postponed several times.

According to the current plan, “No Time to Die” should start in autumn 2021.

It is still unclear how long German cinemas will be closed.
