The chairman of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, wants an independent commission to review the events surrounding the storming of the Capitol in Washington.

Pelosi said the commission would investigate and report on the facts and causes behind the deadly attack on the Capitol building on January 6th, also with a view to interfering with the peaceful handover.

In her letter to Democratic colleagues, Pelosi said the US House of Commons would also work to ensure that money flows into additional security measures at the Capitol.

After the acquittal in the impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump in the Senate, support from both parties for such a step became apparent.

Republican officials also signaled on US news broadcasts on Sunday that further investigations were likely.

Hearings on the Capitol Tower are already planned for this month in the Senate.

Two-thirds majority missed

Five and a half weeks after his violent supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington, Trump was acquitted on Saturday of the charge of incitement to riot.

A majority of 57 of the 100 members in the US Senate declared him guilty, but the prosecution clearly missed the two-thirds majority required for impeachment.

Trump was charged with incitement to riot for denying his election defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in a speech on January 6 and calling on supporters to march to Congress to confirm the election result.

An angry crowd broke into the building, rioted and threatened to kill Trump's Vice President Mike Pence for unwilling to stop Biden from confirming his election victory.

The meeting had to be interrupted and five people died.

Trump was the first US president to face impeachment proceedings twice and the first ever to face impeachment proceedings at the end of his term.

Saturday's Senate decision did not end the debate over the responsibility of the former US president.
