Berlin / Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The number of visitors to Saxony-Anhalt's cinemas fell sharply in the first year of the corona pandemic.

In 2020, almost 854,000 tickets were sold, announced the Film Funding Agency (FFA) in Berlin.

That is a good 1.77 million less than in the previous year - a decrease of around 67.5 percent.

The turnover of the venues also fell accordingly.

According to the FFA, this has fallen by 69 percent to a good 6.7 million euros.

In 2019, it was still a good 21.8 million euros.

"The fact that 2020 would be dramatic for the cinemas was announced at the first Corona lockdown in mid-March," said the statement on Tuesday.

Due to the closings in spring and from November and the restrictions on visitor numbers in summer and autumn, 80.5 million fewer tickets were sold across Germany than in 2019. In total, the FFA counted almost 38.1 million admissions.
