Offenbach (dpa / lhe) - The large-scale renovation of the Kaiserlei roundabout between Frankfurt and Offenbach has reached another stage.

Soon the last piece of what was once the largest roundabout in Europe will go out of operation, as the city of Offenbach announced.

Work on this will continue on this Wednesday after having been interrupted for a few days due to the onset of winter.

For drivers, the route from the north via the A661 to Offenbach-Zentrum is now more complicated - they must first turn towards Frankfurt and then follow the signs.

The roundabout connected the entry and exit of the Autobahn 661 with the traffic between the two neighboring cities.

It has been replaced by intersections with traffic lights.

The building, which was once more than 250 meters in diameter, was soon only reminiscent of photos, said Offenbach City Councilor Paul-Gerhard Weiß (FDP).

According to the information so far, the renovation should be completed by the end of the year, and the increased traffic will then be directed more efficiently.

The new traffic light-controlled double intersection is designed for up to 94,000 vehicles per day.

The city recently stated the costs at around 52.5 million euros.

The federal and state governments carry the majority.
