Cottbus / Baruth (dpa / bb) - After the surprising decision to open, operations in the Brandenburg animal parks and zoos have slowly started.

"We only had a few guests today, but word of that must get around first," said the spokeswoman for the Schorfheide Wildlife Park, Imke Heyter, on Monday.

At the weekend, the zoo first had to get all employees out of short-time work, she said.

"It's supposed to be warmer next weekend, then business will be up and running again."

All visitors who are themselves on short-time work only have to pay the reduced admission for children, says Heyter.

The cabinet decided on Friday that zoos and animal parks may reopen on Monday.

Also in the wildlife park in Johannismühle, spokesman Jan Tayeb hopes for mild temperatures at the weekend.

"So far there have only been about ten families - but it's not vacation time either," he said.

The operation could be restarted quickly, said Tayeb.

"But we weren't really in hibernation either."

In the Cottbus zoo, some visitors used the opening of the outdoor facilities and went for a walk with their children.

Animal inspector Lutz Robel said there weren't too many animals outside in the icy temperatures.

But that will change over the course of the week as it gets warmer.

Then, among other things, zebras, reindeer, tigers and camels can be seen.

The zoo has up to 40 outdoor facilities and is home to 150 species.

The zoo's kiosk is also already open and sells hot drinks to take away.

At the end of January, the zoo had shown the offspring of its Chinese leopard pair in public for the first time.

There are currently five Chinese leopards living in the Cottbus Zoo.
