The history of Catalonia's independence dates back to 1932, when the region gained autonomy for the first time.

This time, however, it was short-lived, as dictator Franco regained power during the Spanish Civil War a few years later.

It would then take until 1979 before the region got its own government again.

After countless attempts at increased influence, the Catalans went to the polls to vote for independence in 2017. 90 percent then wanted to break away from Spain, but after the election result was declared invalid, chaotic scenes erupted.

The regional president fled, the Catalans protested and the region lost its autonomy for seven months.

All this has left its mark on the Catalans, according to SVT's correspondent David Boati.

- It was a real blow in 2017 and nine political leaders are still imprisoned, so some major attempts at independence will probably not be made today, he says.
