Hanau / Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) has ordered state-wide mourning flags for all public buildings and offices of the State of Hesse on the occasion of the first anniversary of the racially motivated murders in Hanau for this Friday (February 19).

"One year after the terrible, racist terrorist acts in Hanau, the state of Hesse is commemorating the victims who were murdered in this right-wing extremist attack," the Interior Minister declared on Monday in Wiesbaden.

With the nationwide mourning flag, Hessen is setting a visible sign against forgetting.

He asked all cities and municipalities as well as corporations, institutions and foundations under public law to join and to set the flags at half-mast from seven in the morning until nightfall next Friday, Beuth said.

On February 19, 2020, a 43-year-old German shot nine people with foreign roots in Hanau.

The man had previously posted pamphlets and videos of conspiracy theories and racist views on the Internet.

After the fact, the 43-year-old is also said to have killed his mother before killing himself.
