Hanover (dpa / lni) - On the occasion of the festival year "1700 years of Jewish life in Germany", Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) signed a cooperation agreement.

With the agreement with the association that organizes the festival year, a contribution is to be made against the growing anti-Semitism.

«The Holocaust pursued the extinction of Jewish life in Germany and Europe.

The crimes in Bergen-Belsen and many other places of horror will forever be linked to our history and our lives, ”said Weil on Monday in Hanover.

«Jews have played a decisive role in shaping our history, our culture and our identity over the centuries - long before our federal state even existed.

I am very happy about the diverse Jewish life in Lower Saxony, ”emphasized the head of government.

But he is very aware that Jews in Lower Saxony are also confronted with hostility and anti-Semitism.

That is why the cooperation agreement is a clear sign of solidarity, respectful cooperation and against any form of anti-Semitism, agitation and exclusion.

The anniversary will be celebrated nationwide in a wide variety of events in 2021.

The kick-off event with Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier will take place on February 21 in Cologne.

Lower Saxony will participate in the program of the festive year together with Jewish communities, universities, schools, educational institutions, associations, foundations, companies, cultural workers and in particular with the Villa Seligmann in Hanover.
