Greifswald / Kiel (dpa) - A monastery book will in future give an overview of the monasteries in historic Pomerania on both sides of the Oder.

"We will not only tackle a standard scientific work," said Oliver Auge, head of the project on Monday at the start of a job in Greifswald.

It is also about making the cultural region more aware and strengthening tourism, said Auge, who is a professor of regional history at the University of Kiel and has already published a monastery book for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.

A cultural guide and website are also planned.

Minister of Culture Bettina Martin (SPD) said that when it comes to the history of the church in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, many think of brick Gothic.

However, this story goes back much further.

"Monasteries, monasteries, convents - all of this has existed in the Pomerania region since (...) around the 11th century."

The project has partners in Poland and beyond in the Baltic Sea region.

"To that extent, this is also a European project."

Within seven years, the scientists want to first compile a register and then the monastery book.

According to the eye, it is about 65 places.

He expects a multitude of new findings.

In addition to Kiel University, the Historical Commission for Pomerania, the University of Greifswald, the State Archives Szczecin / Stettin and the State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation are also involved.

The planned costs of 1.65 million euros will be paid by the state, the federal government, the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen and Halbach Foundation and the Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung.

The Parliamentary State Secretary for Western Pomerania Patrick Dahlemann (SPD) was pleased that a Pomeranian monastery book was now being created after the Mecklenburg monastery book.

He referred to the particular attraction of places such as the ruins of the Eldena monastery near Greifswald.
