Berlin (dpa) - With a new alliance “Culture Spaces Berlin”, the capital wants to secure affordable work spaces for artists.

It is about acquiring, preparing and expanding real estate in order to be able to make it available as production and representation rooms for art, said Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer on Monday in Berlin.

"The pressure to suppress is great," said the left-wing politician.

The goal - 2000 such places by the end of the legislative period - will not be enough.

“At best, this is an intermediate stage,” says Lederer.

For a long time, Berlin was an internationally attractive location for artists and cultural workers.

With a view to real estate speculation and land prices, this is increasingly changing.

The alliance of administration, the independent scene and the real estate industry has set itself the task of ensuring that appropriate rooms can also be offered in the future.
