February 14, 2021 The American President, Joe Biden, has launched an appeal to Congress to intervene "immediately and with common sense reforms" to limit the spread of weapons in the United States.

Biden spoke on the third anniversary of the Valentine's Day massacre in a high school in Parkland, Florida, in which 19-year-old Nicholas Cruz, armed with an AR-15 automatic rifle, killed 17 people.

"This Administration will not wait for the next massacre" with firearms to act, Biden promised that he had made arms restrictions one of the points at the center of his electoral program.

Among the reforms called for are criminal background checks on gun buyers, in particular banning them for those convicted of hate crimes, and a ban on the manufacture and sale of assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.
