US President Joe Biden has spoken out in favor of tightening gun law on the anniversary of one of the worst school massacres in US history.

"This administration will not wait for the next mass shooting to heed this demand," he said in Washington on Sunday.

He appealed to Congress to initiate a "sensible" weapon reform.

Biden called for background checks "for all arms sales" and a ban on assault rifles and high capacity magazines.

House Democratic Chairwoman Nancy Pelosi said the House will "pass these and other life-saving laws."

However, at least ten Republican members of the Senate would have to approve for a pass, which currently seems difficult.

Biden spoke on the third anniversary of the school massacre in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 people were killed.

A 19-year-old former student broke into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine's Day 2018 and shot 17 students and school staff.

The massacre led to the creation of the March for Our Lives movement for stricter gun laws and US-wide protests.

Their demands for a tightening of gun law have so far failed because of the Republicans in Congress.
