Berlin (dpa) - Vincenzo Grifo from SC Freiburg has spoken out against preferential vaccination for athletes in the corona pandemic.

"We are very privileged, we are allowed to do our job," said the midfielder on Saturday evening in the ZDF's "current sports studio".

"I would say that we prefer the elderly when it comes to vaccinating, and then it is the boys' turn," added the 27-year-old Italian national soccer player.

In German professional sport there was recently heated discussion about a possible preference for professional athletes in vaccination.

This was preceded by statements from Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who had suggested at Sport1 that football professionals could serve as vaccination models in the population.

The statements met with an enormous response, although such a question is not on the political agenda at present or in the near future.

Rummenigge had justified his move with the fact that trust in the population would grow if, for example, a FC Bayern player had himself vaccinated.

Rummenigge had neither requested a preference nor made a comparison with other professions.
