Rostock (dpa / mv) - A courageous passer-by has stopped a drunk driver who had already rammed several vehicles at a gas station in Rostock.

The caught 61-year-old was taken into custody shortly after noon on Sunday by alerted police officers, a police spokesman said.

The passer-by noticed the battered car and the unusual driving style and removed the ignition key.

A breath alcohol level of 1.91 per mille was measured in the 61-year-old.

The investigations revealed that the driver had previously rammed five other cars in the Groß Klein district.

A fence at a dumpster facility was also destroyed.

Then the 61-year-old had "fled" to the gas station, where smoke was already rising from the engine compartment of his car, so that the fire department was alerted.

The damage to the other cars and objects was estimated at around 40,000 euros.

The driver's license was secured.
